“That’s a lot of blood.”

“Where’s Sans?”

“Get her to the security wing of the hospital. I don’t want anyone near her without security there.”

“Yes, sir.”

***

“Heart rate good. Blood pressure good.”

“No real damage… Minor concussion… Any time.”

***

“Not her… Medical history doesn’t match.”

“Commander Heap?” Jayla asked, becoming more alert to the voices around her.

“You said you were bringing Sans.”

“I did, sort of.”

“When your medical history from your vitals chip didn’t match your medical scans, we scanned your fingerprints,” he growled.

A colonel stood in the room next to Heap. Short, bald, a scowl she could easily imagine being permanent. “How could you have been in contact this whole time without knowing you were speaking to Sans?”

“I don’t like it any more than you do, sir,” Heap said. “I want to put a warrant out for Chext and the other Sans.” His voice faded as the two men left the room. A security officer came in and attached restraints to the sides of the bed.

Jayla stared at the ceiling as the restraints closed around her forearms. She was in custody again. She’d be going back to prison, probably to the Riviera. She didn’t want to think about it. She shouldn’t have come straight here using Bundles’s name, but she had no other safe place. If she died, her intel would be lost, and Davenport and his cohorts would never pay the price for the war they started. This way, at least she could pass it on.

A groan escaped her lips as she realized the intel was in her quarters, on the ship. If they didn’t bring it with them, she’d sacrificed Craig and Frankie’s freedom for nothing.

“Who’s there?” Jayla asked. In the dark hospital room, something had woken her, though she couldn’t pinpoint what. Her head still hurt, but at least she could think straight. She felt, more than heard, someone in the room with her. “I know someone’s here.”

Both arms were restrained. She couldn’t sit up. The call button was at her fingertips, but as she tried to grab it in the dark, she knocked it off the edge of the bed.

It shouldn’t be this dark, she thought. It wasn’t a power outage. She could still hear various electronic noises from the hallway.

Her breath came out raspy as she pulled against the restraints. Someone was here, and friends didn’t hide in the dark.

When the person finally came into view, he was right next to her bed. Jayla had no time to scream for help before a leather-gloved hand covered her mouth and pinched her nose. Someone else restrained her legs, so she couldn’t bring her knees up.

Jayla tried to scream. She tried to move out from under the hand. She tried to free her legs. The darkness grew darker. With his free hand, the man yanked the plug to the machine tracking her vitals.

Davenport would be
